Growing Community,

One Bed at a Time

Our Food Independence Gardens (FIG Program) brings the Urban Harvest Exchange mission to life across Tacoma and Pierce County.

FIG sites are small, community-powered garden beds — usually 2–5 raised beds — installed in right-of-way spaces such as parking strips, curbside areas, and sidewalk edges. These public-facing beds are intentionally placed where neighbors pass by daily. They are living demonstrations that food can grow anywhere, even in the smallest spaces.

Every FIG garden is planted with seasonal vegetables, herbs, greens, flowers, and pollinator-friendly plants. All produce grown in these beds is harvested and shared 100% free at our 24/7 Sharing Tables at Tacoma Urban Farm. Anyone can take what they need — no requirements, no judgment, no barriers.

FIG is more than gardening. It’s about food sovereignty:
empowering neighbors to take responsibility for our own food security, building a community-led food web, and proving that every small patch of soil can feed someone.

Each FIG site becomes a neighborhood landmark — a place of inspiration, connection, and pride.
